I’m Mindy Essex and I teach a Music+ course to 6th through8th graders in Mt. Vernon Middle School. I’ve been teaching for 26 years – from elementary age to college – from general music to band to choir. I have my B.M.E., M.A., and Ph.D. in music education from The Ohio State University. I’m thrilled with the opportunity Mount Vernon has given me to teach such an innovative class like Music+. It’s an adventure for myself and my students everyday! As a music educator, my goal is to help my students find an alternative path to musicianship. As an educator, it’s to give my students the skills and knowledge to have a full life, not just make a living.
This blog started as a resource for middle school general music teachers because it can be very difficult to find curriculum for this age. Resources for teachers will continue to be posted as well as updates for parents, students, and teachers about what is going on in our classroom. You may also occasionally find some thoughts about music education in general. Views and opinions expressed are my own.
- Engage students in social music making in ways they can continue throughout their lives
- Reveal to and engage students in the ways in which music is part of our lives and society
- Engage students in the practice of the scientific process, critical thinking skills, and 21st century skills
- Instill in students the importance of reflection in the learning process – “Fail To Learn”
